Vampire Crawlers Blue Reaper: The Drowner, Explained

Short answer

The blue reaper is the Drowner: 4,000 HP, not a boss, and it can appear in any dungeon after four turns without an attack card while a playable one sits in your hand. IGN calls the same enemy Blue Death; the wiki's name is Drowner. The 60,000 HP version, DrownerBelowElite, is a real boss in Gallo Dungeons, and the Tappo relic stops the ordinary one in normal stages.

If a blue reaper walked into your fight and you cannot work out what triggered it, the answer is usually the turn you just took. The game counts turns without an attack card, and four is the limit. It is not a story boss, it does not drop a chest, and it is a different enemy from Red Death.

Three names for one enemy

Name Who uses it What it points at
Blue Reaper Players, Steam guides The blue reaper sprite that walks in when a run stalls
Blue Death IGN's Red Death guide The same enemy, named for its colour
Drowner Official wiki and enemy data The enemy's actual name
DrownerBelowElite Official wiki The 60,000 HP boss version under Gallo Tower

The sprite is a reaper, the same silhouette as Red Death and the Trickster, recoloured blue. That recolour is the whole reason for the nickname: three enemies share one design, and players name them by colour long before they find the internal names. The wiki's Drowner page even lists "Updated Reaper sprites" as its Death Parade change, which tells you how closely the family is drawn.

None of this is a rename you need to remember for gameplay. The name matters for one thing only: searching. The wiki has no page called "blue reaper"; the Drowner page is where the infobox, the spawn rule and the two HP values live.

What actually triggers the spawn

The wiki's rule is narrow: four turns without playing an attack card, while at least one attack card in hand is playable. Three details decide whether the counter moves.

  • Only attack cards reset it. A turn of Mana and defense cards is not an attack turn, so the counter keeps climbing.
  • Affordability is part of the check. The wiki notes that an attack card in hand which costs more Mana than you have "will not increment spawning". A hand of unplayable attacks is not a spawn timer.
  • Passing counts as a turn. The end-turn button is not a free action here: it also lights an eye on the boss's turn meter.
What you did this turn Drowner counter
Played an attack card Reset to zero
Played only Mana, defense or utility cards Keeps counting
Ended the turn with an affordable attack card in hand +1
Ended the turn with no affordable attack card Paused, no spawn
Killed the Drowner Removed, and the counter can start again

The practical version: if you are running a combo deck and dragging turns to build the multiplier, you are exactly the player this enemy is aimed at. The same behaviour also cracks your cards, which is a separate punishment described in the combo guide. Two systems, one bad habit.

It is not a boss, and that matters

The data is blunt. The Drowner's boss flag is No, its chest tier is 0, its XP value is 0 and its max hit is 11. In play that means no chest, no gem, no relic and no XP for the kill.

So the fight is a tax on a slow turn, not a reward for a fast one. A boss chest is worth chasing; this is worth avoiding. That is also why the base Drowner is absent from the boss tables while DrownerBelowElite is on them: only the flagged boss earns a row.

The two Drowners

The name covers two different enemies, and the confusion costs runs. The ordinary one is a stalker; the elite is a Gallo Dungeons boss.

Stat Drowner DrownerBelowElite
HP 4,000 60,000
Boss flag No Yes
Dungeon Any Gallo Dungeons
Max hit 11 20
Armor 0 0
Freeze resistance 0 35
Knockback resistance 80 85
Disarm resistance 80 75
Instakill resistance 0.9 0.9
XP 0 0

Both have zero armor, so every point of damage lands. The difference is the health bar and the resistances: the elite shrugs off a third of your Freeze and all but the strongest knockback, while the ordinary one can be frozen solid.

How much damage 4,000 HP actually is

Because armor is 0, the only question is how many hits you can land before it acts. This is what the health pool looks like against the cards you are likely to own.

The table assumes Combo 0 with no Might, Area or damage-gem investment: the card's printed damage only. The damage formula multiplies that bracket by everything else, so every row gets cheaper in a real run.

Hit size Hits to kill
45 (Cherry Bomb, Fire Wand) 89
100 (Eight The Sparrow, Vicious Hunger) 40
160 (Holy Wand, Death Spiral) 25
200 (Thousand Edge) 20
500 (Vandalier) 8

Early in a run, 89 casts of a 1-Mana card at combo 0 (45 by combo 1, 23 by combo 3) is not a plan; 20 hits from an evolved weapon is. The stats point the same way: freeze resistance 0 means Clock Lancet stops it, while 80 knockback and 80 disarm resistance mean those two effects are close to wasted. If you have to fight it, freeze it and hit it with the biggest single-target card in the deck. If you can avoid the spawn, avoid it.

Three reapers, three triggers

The colour family is worth learning because each member is summoned by a different mistake.

Enemy Colour What summons it HP Boss flag
Red Death Red Reaching the bottom of a dungeon's final floor 1,000,000 No
Trickster Purple Playing the same card five times in one turn; the fifth play shatters it 30,000 No
Drowner Blue Four turns without an attack card 4,000 No

Red Death is the one that ends runs, and the Red Death guide covers the 333-damage opener and the Freeze timing. The Trickster is the one that punishes a repeated card. The blue one punishes a stalled turn. All three carry the same internal boss = No flag, so none of them is a boss in the game's own data.

Stopping it for good

There are three answers, and one of them is permanent.

Play an attack card at least once every four turns. This is the real fix. It costs you one card from the combo, and it resets the counter before the fourth turn ends.

End the turn instead of stalling. Ending a turn normally breaks the combo, which is why players stall in the first place. Chain Link (the Arcana that keeps the combo between turns) removes that cost: you can end the turn, keep the multiplier and play the attack card on the next one. The Drowner counter still only cares about attack cards, but the turns you spend drawing stop being turns you fill with random plays.

Take Tappo. The relic's official text is "Prevents the Drowner from appearing in normal stages", and it is found in the Gallo Tower dungeons. What it does not do is remove DrownerBelowElite from Gallo Dungeons: that one is a boss with a fixed location, so the relic has nothing to suppress. The relic list has its location alongside the other 18.

Q: Is the blue reaper a boss?

No. The Drowner's boss flag is No, its chest tier is 0 and its XP value is 0, so there is no chest and no drop. The boss-looking version is DrownerBelowElite, 60,000 HP in Gallo Dungeons, which is flagged as a boss.

Q: Which dungeon does the blue reaper appear in?

Any of them. The wiki's infobox lists its dungeon as "Any", and it is filed under Gallo Tower only because that is where the enemy table places it. The spawn rule is global: stall anywhere and it can walk in. The elite is the exception, with Gallo Dungeons as its fixed home.

Q: How many turns until the blue reaper spawns?

Four turns without an attack card, with a playable attack card in hand. A turn of Mana cards counts toward the four. A hand where every attack card is too expensive does not, because the game checks for a playable attack before it advances the spawn.

Q: Does Tappo stop the blue reaper?

In normal stages, yes. It does not touch the 60,000 HP DrownerBelowElite in Gallo Dungeons, because that enemy is a placed boss rather than a stalling spawn. If you are farming Gallo Dungeons, Tappo changes nothing about the fight waiting at the bottom.

Q: Is the blue reaper the same as Red Death?

No. Red Death has 1,000,000 HP and a 333 max hit, appears at the bottom of every dungeon, and is the run-ending fight. The blue reaper has 4,000 HP and an 11 max hit, and it appears because you stopped playing attacks. Same sprite family, different enemy, different trigger.
