Vampire Crawlers vs Vampire Survivors vs Slay the Spire¶
The two questions people actually search: "is this just more Vampire Survivors?" and "is this a Slay the Spire clone?" The answer to both is no, and the differences tell you whether you'll like it.
Is Bone Zone in Vampire Crawlers?¶
No. Bone Zone is a Vampire Survivors stage, and Crawlers does not reuse the Survivors stage list. Its dungeons are organised as 9 dungeon families made of 18 stages, and none of them is called Bone Zone (dungeon breakdown). If you are looking for the skeleton-heavy map from Survivors, it is in the original game, not this one.
The three games side by side¶
| Vampire Crawlers | Vampire Survivors | Slay the Spire | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Studio | poncle | poncle | Mega Crit |
| Genre | Turn-based, card-driven first-person dungeon crawler | Auto-battler bullet-heaven action | Roguelike deckbuilder, 2D map runs |
| Core loop | Build a deck, climb ascending mana costs for combo multipliers, crawl dungeons | Pick weapons, auto-attack, survive waves | Pick cards, climb a branching map, fight elites and bosses |
| Run length | Short dungeon runs | 30-minute waves | Long runs (roughly an hour, more for heart runs) |
| Price | $9.99 | $4.99 base, often discounted | $24.99 |
| Platforms | PC, Switch, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, iOS, Android | Nearly everything, incl. last-gen | PC, consoles, mobile |
| Difficulty | Approachable; the combo system carries you | Very approachable | Punishing, especially at high Ascension |
If you're coming from Vampire Survivors¶
Same universe, same studio, different genre. Vampire Crawlers keeps the weapons, the characters and the absurd damage numbers, but the action is replaced by a card game: you play cards in ascending mana order to build a combo multiplier (starting at +100%), and Wild cards keep the chain alive across cost gaps.
What survives from Survivors:
- The weapons: Whip, King Bible, Garlic, Pentagram, Santa Water and friends, now as cards with evolutions.
- The characters: Antonio, Imelda, Pasqualina, Poe, Arca and more, now purchasable Crawlers with distinct trigger effects.
- The evolution fantasy: 18 weapon evolutions, including faithful ones like Garlic → Soul Eater and King Bible → Unholy Vespers (full table).
What's gone: the auto-attack, the 30-minute survival timer, and the bullet-heaven screen chaos. If those were the whole appeal for you, this will feel slow for an hour.
If you're coming from Slay the Spire¶
Vampire Crawlers is not a Slay the Spire clone: it's far lighter and faster. The differences that matter:
| Vampire Crawlers | Slay the Spire | |
|---|---|---|
| Deck growth | Cards come from a fixed pool plus Crawler cards; gems and evolutions modify them | Cards are drafted per run from a large pool |
| Map | Dungeon floors, mostly linear per zone | Branching map with path choice |
| Combos | Mana-cost ordering is the central skill (a unique system) | Energy curve and card synergies |
| Failure | Revives soften death; runs are short | Death is death; runs are long |
| Complexity | Low barrier: "we are not very good at card games" was the design brief | High barrier, deep optimisation space |
poncle's own framing, from Matteo Sapio: "We love card games, but we are not very good at card games. They're complicated. So, we made the game that we wanted to play." That's the honest positioning: it's the deckbuilder for people who bounce off deckbuilders.
Slay the Spire 2 (in early access) is the sequel to the harder, deeper game. If what you want is a punishing, endlessly optimisable deckbuilder, that's your lane. If you want a $9.99 card game you can finish a run of in one sitting, Vampire Crawlers is the better fit.
Which should you play?¶
- "I want more Vampire Survivors" → Vampire Survivors itself (it's still getting updates, including co-op). Crawlers is a different genre wearing the same skin.
- "I want a deep deckbuilder" → Slay the Spire (or its sequel). Crawlers is intentionally shallower.
- "I want a cheap, snappy card game with a combo system I've never seen before" → Vampire Crawlers. The ascending-mana combo is genuinely novel, and $9.99 (or free on Game Pass) is a low-risk entry.
- "I want to 100% something" → Crawlers has 161 achievements, a 1,000,000 HP secret boss and a secret character (Red Death guide); that's a real completionist project.
Many players end up owning all three: Survivors for the action itch, Crawlers for a quick combo puzzle, Slay the Spire when they have an evening.
